Dial 999 or 112 for police, fire and ambulance services. The calls are free.
In case of theft, find the nearest police station (ask an assistant in a shop or bank) and report the incident with as many details as possible.
If visiting from abroad and your passport or airline tickets are stolen, contact your consulate office in London as well as the police. As in all major cities, carry a minimum of cash and keep your bags fastened and close to your body. In Britain, you're not legally obliged to carry any identification so leave your passport in the hotel safe whenever it's not needed.

In case of a road accident:
Do not admit liability
Ask any witnesses to give a testimony
Contact the police
Exchange names, addresses and insurance details with the other driver(s)
Get a report from the police for insurance purposes.
Lost Property
Property left on trains is held for one week at the station at which it was handed in before being forwarded to Central Lost Property, Marylebone Station, Marylebone Road, NW1 (0171-387 9400). Southern Region lost property is held at local railway stations only.
